The Gaylord box is a big, corrugated pallet box for shipping bulk stuff. Their name came from the manufacturer who made them, but now they are available everywhere.
Bulk bins, bulk boxes, pallet boxes, or pallet containers don’t matter what name they are known by; they still serve the same purpose. If you outfit them right, you can even store liquids in them.
Benefits of using Gaylord Boxes fin your warehouse
It’s common to see them in warehouse stores or at your local grocery store, where people buy products in bulk. For example, a box of watermelons would just be opened at the top, so customers could grab them straight from the box.
Often, Gaylord boxes can be repurposed for another use. They are commonly used for storing bulk materials that will be processed or divided into smaller packages in the future.
The boxes are usually made of multiple layers of corrugated cardboard and are usually mounted right on a pallet. This makes them ideal as a way to hold a lot of stuff.
Incredibly versatile, Gaylord boxes are made from sturdy cardboard and can be reused by both consumers and shippers.
Origins of the Gaylord Box Name
Initially called the Gaylord Box, the product was named after Robert Gaylord, who owned the J.C. Bulis company from 1920 until 1925, and renamed it after himself. Clifford W. Gaylord, Clifford’s nephew, became the company’s president in 1925, and he filed several patents dealing with the shipping industry.
The company started to produce and market pallet-mounted boxes that were so successful they rebranded themselves as Gaylord Container Corporation.
Despite several acquisitions, mergers, and takeovers that have taken place over the years, International Paper still owns the company.
Different Sizes and Dimensions of Used Gaylord Boxes
Due to the fact that Gaylord boxes are designed to be mounted on top of a metal, wood, or plastic pallet for transportation, they are available in a variety of sizes. The most common dimensions are 48 inches in length, 30-48 inches in width, and 24 to 48 inches in height.
There are as many types of shipping containers as there are manufacturers, and sometimes you may see an octagonal container. Corrugated cardboard boxes are lightweight and can be reused and recycled, while plastic and metal containers are often used repeatedly by shippers for several years.
Gaylord Box Different PLY Amounts (walls)
There are a number of reasons why this cardboard storage box is popular, including the fact that the walls come in a variety of thicknesses. Manufacturers create each layer by gluing fluted corrugated sheets between sections of cardboard, ranging from two to eight layers.
Size and wall thickness determine the approximate weight capacity of the box. Double- and triple-wall boxes typically carry 1,000 pounds, while plastic versions can carry up to 4,000 pounds.

There is no doubt that 5 PLY or 5 wall gaylord boxes are the strongest form of gaylord boxes. With their strength, these boxes are able to carry multiple thousand-pound loads in one shipment. This makes them an excellent option for shipping large or extra large industrial loads.
Due to their huge carrying capacity, they’re the most expensive kind of Gaylord box. There aren’t as many of these boxes as there are 2 wall and 3 wall Gaylords, so they’re usually purchased in large quantities. If your cargo is lightweight or you want a long-term storage solution, you can repurpose a Gaylord
Versatile Used packaging
If you want to ship a heavy product, you might want to consider Gaylord boxes, which can be customized for the type and weight of the contents.
It’s a smart idea to reinforce the walls and floor with corrugated liners for goods that bulge, like powders, pellets, grains, and grains. Plastic liners are a good option for protecting the contents from moisture damage.
These handy workhorses can even be outfitted with valves. This means that they can be used to store and dispense liquid cargo, as well as for the transport of recycling and waste with no problems.
Depending on the style of box, it can be delivered preassembled and ready to use. Other styles, like gift boxes, may need to be flattened and assembled without gluing or staples.
Tops and Slip Sheets
In addition to the Gaylord boxes with lids, which are available in different sizes and configurations to suit the intended contents, the full bottom Gaylord boxes can also be ordered without lids depending on the contents.
Full Flap vs Partial Flap
With full flaps across the bottom that securely hold powders and pellets, this pallet is an excellent choice for small, dry cargo. Partial flaps that do not quite meet are a better choice for produce that requires extra ventilation, but will not fall out of the pallet. If a slip sheet is added to a partial flap, it turns into a full flap.
It is possible to assemble the box on top of the pallet using the tray bottom. The sides can be slotted into place and locked together after the entire configuration has been assembled.
Gaylord boxes can handle any shipping or storage need, whether it’s a heavy, bulky liquid or a lightweight vegetable.
Are bulk bins stackable?
For warehouse storage purposes, these heavy-duty boxes can be stacked in order to reduce storage space. Of course, you should be aware of the weight capacity, as well as the strength of the lid and floor before stacking these boxes. This will enable you to avoid any potential safety hazards.
